Paper Curl I

Artist: LC Neill
Title: “Paper Curl I”
Medium: Oil on Panel
Dimensions: 6″x6″

I 2007 I did a painting called “2D, 3D, 2D” – I took two dimensional paper and constructed a ball making a three dimensional object, and then I made a still life painting from it returning it to a two dimensional representation.

This is further exploration of the simple idea that a flat object can change dramatically if you alter it a bit.  It gains height, width, depth, – ie. volume.  The changes are profound, a curl and a tuck and you’ve built a cylinder that can support weight.  The ball in my earlier painting altered it’s properties so it could easily move across a surface.

I’ll be doing a few more of these because they intrigue me, and I like the shadows they cast once they become a 3D object.  This one is suspended in the air.

This painting is sold.
