Love and Steroids

Love

Artist: LC Neill
Title: “Love”
Medium: Oil on Panel
Dimensions: 6″x6″

Here’s another scrabble inspired piece. When completing this painting I took a break to do some spring yard cleaning, and came across several saplings. It was a little early for any identifying leaves so I assumed (never do that) it was a hickory just like all the other large trees on the lot. I took the pruner, lopped them off, and carried with other small pines that were cropping up. Two days later I had several spots that were quite itchy. Yep, a very good case of poison sumac. The doctor gave me a 2 week prescription for steroids.

I’m not joining the likes of alleged use by Alex Rodriguez or Barry Bonds because #1 I’m not taking these things voluntarily and #2 it’s not that kind (anabolic) steroid, but none the less, I haven’t been getting much sleep at night since starting the regimen.

So with tongue in cheek, I’m putting a challenge in front of myself to see how many paintings I can get done over the next 10 days starting tomorrow – April 1st. My current average is about 1 a week, but I know I can do more and I’m a believer that the more you do, the better you become.

I’ll be tweeting about it here and there if you want to follow my progress on twitter.

Thanks!

I’m sorry this painting is already sold, however I would entertain a commission should you have a special word in mind. Find out about custom word paintings here.

Every spring the main street in our neighborhood comes alive with a spectacular show of cherry trees blossoming. I’m not saying it’s Washington DC, but it is very impressive. With this inspiration, I packed up my stuff and found a comfortable spot directly under one of the trees. I was able to see the trunk and look up into the sky at the umbrella of blossoms over me. The sun was peeking through the branches, I could smell the blossoms, and watch the frenzied bees gather their nectar. I felt different about my painting – as if I was drawing with the paints.

A little while later I recalled a series of Van Gogh paintings I saw while in Amsterdam. He did several trees, and orchards. I pulled a couple of images (below) for you to enjoy.

Thanks for so many things. This little painting was inspired from playing the word game scrabble. After trying several arrangements with the tiles, I liked the way the shadows echoed the form of the letter K. I thought…”Oh cool – that’s it”.

Sorry this painting is already sold , but I would entertain a commissioned painting for you. Find out about custom word paintings here.
