Knot Red

Artist: LC Neill
Title: “Knot Red”
Medium: Oil on Panel

Below is a short progress video showing different stages of the painting before it was finished.

I started by creating a paper sculpture. Then it needed some interesting shadows so I placed it inside my still life box and adjusted the lighting. Once I had it where I wanted it, I drew directly on the canvas with paint and brush in burnt umber to get my basic shapes and values. You’ll see a few adjustments were made along the way.

Very interesting to see the progression of the painting. Looked “finished” many times along the way. The simple subject matter makes it possible to study how a different background affect the mood. Thanks for sharing this little movie!
