Sorry this painting is already sold, but I may have others like it. Please contact me to find out more.

I did this painting as a study for a larger one, perhaps 30″x40″. I have so many shows coming up this fall and I need to paint my heart out all summer long in order to supply all of them. I hope you enjoy this one.

Ingres Pose
Detail

Every free Saturday morning I have, I try and make it to downtown historic Mooresville, NC to a place called Artworks on Main where they hold an open studio for drawing. There is no instructor, you just show up and for a small fee you have access to a live model. There’s a really good group of people with varied experience levels. Each person brings there own materials and can do whatever pleases them.

I love going there for several reasons:

  1. I’m around like minded people.
  2. The creative juices are flowing everywhere which provide good vibes for everyone.
  3. I get to practice drawing/painting from a live model for which there is no other substitution.
  4. The owners are friendly and just downright nice people.
  5. The list goes on….

Once a month they hold long poses. That is when the model holds the same pose for the entire session. Of course they get breaks, but when they go back at it, they are in the same pose. That allows me to complete a piece a little more significant than just a quick sketch. Like this one which is 2 feet by 4 feet, Oil over Acrylic.

This pose above was inspired by Ingres below. I’ve painted the model by observing from her other side. My rendition is spontaneous, expressive, and loose whereas the one below likely took several months to complete.

This Ingres is located at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France – It is Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Montauban, 1780-Paris, 1867) Une Odalisque (harem woman) 1814
