Title: “First Light #2″
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 20″x16″
This painting is the second of a new series I am doing called “First Light”.
It’s difficult to explain, but when the sky does something like this, you just soak it in, enjoy, and reflect. I only hope I did justice to what I saw that day.
If you would like to see more of these, I’ll be introducing the original paintings of my “First Light” series at the Lakeside Artists Studio tour – Friday October 15, and Saturday October 16. For a complete schedule of my events this fall click here. To find out more about this painting, please send me an email.

Title: “First Light #1″
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 18″x24″
This painting is the first of a new series I am doing called “First Light”.
Ever since we have lived on Lake Norman, I’ve been getting up with the sunrise. Our house opens to the lake facing East, so it’s only natural that the sun wakes me up. We overlook a large cove with satellite islands scattered around. One small island is directly in front of us, which I’ve been studying for some time now and may have some paintings on later.
Lately I’ve been getting up before the sun to take my kayak out when light is just about to break. I paddle into the cove to watch the sun come up. It’s spectacular, peaceful and ever evolving. Each morning holds a surprise of unbelievable colors and motion. Sometimes the colors are muted, subtle and moody, other times it’s bold, striking and seemingly surreal. I’ll be writing more about this, but I wanted to give you a sneak peek at one of the paintings I’ve been working on. I hope you enjoy!
If you would like to see more of these, I’ll be introducing the “First Light” series at my Open Studio Friday October 15, and Saturday October 16. For a complete schedule of events this fall click here. To find out more about this painting, please send me an email.

Title: “Turquoise and Brown Twist”
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 30″x40″
Part of my 2D-3D-2D series this turquoise and brown was a sculpture I created and then painted. Although the main subject is turquoise and brown, there are many other colors in this painting. Violet, red, and yellow add subtle complimentary accents.

Title: “Ingres Pose”
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 24″x48″

Detail
Every free Saturday morning I have, I try and make it to downtown historic Mooresville, NC to a place called Artworks on Main where they hold an open studio for drawing. There is no instructor, you just show up and for a small fee you have access to a live model. There’s a really good group of people with varied experience levels. Each person brings there own materials and can do whatever pleases them.
I love going there for several reasons:
- I’m around like minded people.
- The creative juices are flowing everywhere which provide good vibes for everyone.
- I get to practice drawing/painting from a live model for which there is no other substitution.
- The owners are friendly and just downright nice people.
- The list goes on….
Once a month they hold long poses. That is when the model holds the same pose for the entire session. Of course they get breaks, but when they go back at it, they are in the same pose. That allows me to complete a piece a little more significant than just a quick sketch. Like this one which is 2 feet by 4 feet, Oil over Acrylic.
This pose above was inspired by Ingres below. I’ve painted the model by observing from her other side. My rendition is spontaneous, expressive, and loose whereas the one below likely took several months to complete.
This Ingres is located at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France – It is Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Montauban, 1780-Paris, 1867) Une Odalisque (harem woman) 1814
