I’m still fascinated by the many forms a flat piece of paper can be coaxed into. This silver and copper paper curl was a joy to paint.

Below is a short progress video showing different stages of the painting before it was finished.

I started by creating a paper sculpture. Then it needed some interesting shadows so I placed it inside my still life box and adjusted the lighting. Once I had it where I wanted it, I drew directly on the canvas with paint and brush in burnt umber to get my basic shapes and values. You’ll see a few adjustments were made along the way.

This is a large painting compared to what I usually do. It’s been fun switching to something that is 5+ times larger.

I currently have a bunch of large blank canvases, approx. 8 of them that I am using for a studio tour I’ll have in November. On occasion you’ll see me post one of the larger ones.

The green color is vibrant almost glowing with rich shadows and a muted background.

This painting is for Meghan and Mishael who married on the beach in Mazatlan Mexico on Valentines Day – February 14, 2009. The ceremony and celebration were a wonderful fusion of Mexican and American traditions.

Amor means Love in Spanish.
