You have to have a little faith. It warmed my heart to hear a collector explain to me this painting reminded me of her late husband. I hope you enjoy it too.

Title: “Copper and Silver Twist I”
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 40″x30″
I’m still fascinated by the many forms a flat piece of paper can be coaxed into. This silver and copper paper curl was a joy to paint.
This painting sold immediately after showing it, but if you like it, I’m in process with a few others that have metallic silver and copper. I plan to have them ready for our Open Studio Tour November 6, and 7. Hope you can come by and see more of my new work.
This painting is sold.

Title: “Knot Red”
Medium: Oil on Panel
Below is a short progress video showing different stages of the painting before it was finished.
I started by creating a paper sculpture. Then it needed some interesting shadows so I placed it inside my still life box and adjusted the lighting. Once I had it where I wanted it, I drew directly on the canvas with paint and brush in burnt umber to get my basic shapes and values. You’ll see a few adjustments were made along the way.
If you have any questions, be sure to leave a comment. Thanks for watching!

Title: “Large Green Twist”
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 40″x30″
This is a large painting compared to what I usually do. It’s been fun switching to something that is 5+ times larger.
I currently have a bunch of large blank canvases, approx. 8 of them that I am using for a studio tour I’ll have in November. On occasion you’ll see me post one of the larger ones.
The green color is vibrant almost glowing with rich shadows and a muted background.

This painting is for Meghan and Mishael who married on the beach in Mazatlan Mexico on Valentines Day – February 14, 2009. The ceremony and celebration were a wonderful fusion of Mexican and American traditions.
Amor means Love in Spanish.
Sorry this painting is already sold, but I may have others like it. Please contact me if you have something in mind.
Back to my 2D-3D-2D series. This one was a challenge. I started off with a yellow paper sculpture on a grayish background and it just wasn’t doing it for me. You can see it below. It was washed out, muddy and the sculpture seemed to float around awkwardly.
Sometimes I’ll put a painting aside and come back to it later with a fresh eye as I did here. Thankfully I have a secret weapon…..it’s called “artistic license”. I wanted to achieve a stronger connection between the subject and the shadow, add a sense of place, and push/pull the contrasts so the paper sculpture seemed to jump off the painting.
I don’t often publish a major change such as this, but that’s part of being an artist so I thought I would share. Many people hold an idea that art just happens. Either you are born with it or your not. Like singing, either you have a voice or you don’t. There is some underlying truth to basic human instincts, however the biggest misconception is that it “just happens”. The reality is…you can’t be really good unless you really work at it by learning, self discovery and practice. An artist is constantly solving problems – composition, color, contrast, perspective, texture, and so on. Recognizing when something is off and making necessary adjustments is an artists never ending journey to mastery.
Thanks for looking at my work!
I’m sorry “Orange Twist” (above) is already sold.
