Incognito

Image - Woman with Hat

Title: “Incognito”
Dimensions: 6″x6″
Medium: Oil

This gal was going to be out in the sun most of the day and was well prepared. What caught my attention about her look was the contrast of the “fashionista” hat and cool dark shades with her very casual golf shirt and khaki pants.

The sun was so strong it bounced off her shirt and reflected back under the hat to her face. It added a glow to her skin that you can clearly see on her neck, jaw line and to a lesser extent the tip of her nose and ear.

Lead Dog

Image - Lead Dog

Title: “Lead Dog”
Dimensions: 6″x6″
Medium: Oil

If I am taking a photo reference for a painting I’ll complete later; invariably there is someone looking right into the lens. It just happens – you hold a camera up and someone looks. In this case it was the dog on the left looking straight at me.

What attracts me to this composition is the melange of feet on the right; the people’s feet the dogs feet (paws), and the shadow feet are all together. In the clearing on the left is the English Setter, and look at his stance. He is taking a rest but is definately the “Lead Dog”.

Nearly every house in the South has a hanging basket of flowers or ferns. They provide a little shade, are nice to look at and the humming birds are sure to visit.

Touring the Tate Modern

Image - Tomato

Title: “Touring the Tate Modern”
Dimensions: 6″x6″
Medium: Oil

This begins a series of paintings I will complete on my recent trip to London and Paris. We visited several museums and of course did a lot of walking. The very first museum we visited was the Tate Modern. It was spectacular! A huge power plant that was converted to a modern art museum. The ceilings were to the sky (just about) and gigantic rooms filled with contemporary from today and the not so distant past. The art represented international artists from about 1900. This painting is of a woman briskly walking through the museum to get to another location. In front of the window is an Alberto Giacometti sculpture. What intereseted me about this painting are the backlight subjects providing an outline of two very different figures that happen to be in congruence with each other.

Young Bull

Image - Bull

Title: “Portrait of a Young Bull”
Dimensions: 7″x5″
Medium: Oil

Before I get into my series of London and Paris, I wanted to paint something from home. This was a young bull in a field not to far from where I live. His horns are little nibs just out of our view, but when he bent his head down to graze you could see them. Many of the farms in our area have given way to new neighborhoods. This little guy was awesome! He sometimes cocked his head and seemed to look at me as strangely as I was looking at him. His face was precious – long eyelashes, dark eyes, a pink nose and a coat that that looked soft and warm.
